Difference Between Wallet & Handbag

So it’s 2022 and you say tomato I say tomatoe. In this day and age, whether you say wallet or handbag no one cares, no one is confused, we all know what you mean.

But, what’s the difference?

Everyone knows that purses and handbags house our personal belongings, make us look stylish and set the tone for how we want to present ourselves. It is a status symbol and both are equally important and more.

I have to believe that you first called it a wallet in your youth and as the price tag grew and the size increased your terminology changed to handbag. A handbag, is all about a large carrying case to put all your things in. With a handbag you have to be a little more organized a bit more discreet but with a handbag not so much.

Traditionally and historically, wallets represent a type of small, practical means of carrying a woman. It didn’t start out as an admired fashion accessory that is now a staple in our wardrobes. In fact the original purse wasn’t a purse at all, it was a form of pocket that women wore under their skirts, and was considered underwear. It was all about function as women’s fashion changed, silhouettes became more refined, the need to get rid of extra lines and large pockets was then removed from women’s clothing. While they don’t like the thought of the Crown Royal bag that comes with your bottle of whiskey at all, it’s only then that they start getting trim and structure.

Meaning and function

The handbag is not much different in its conceptual sense from function and sign from sign of the times. Handbags represent freedom and it really started with the luggage manufacturers. When women were outdoors more often for long periods of time, the need for a bigger catch was born. To be honest, it’s not just for women at all and men will also use “handbags” but we like to call them like messenger bags.

You say tomato, I say tomato at the end of the day, it’s the same thing. Maybe you grew up hearing Grandma say “Please hold my purse” or your mom asking “Where’s my handbag?” any term that rolls off your tongue is fine.

But really let’s break down the Wallet vs Handbag stance.

Wallets and handbags feature two rectangular pieces of fabric that are hand sewn with one small snap that requires no additional tools to attach. Why wallet? Because the wallet represents growth, independence, freedom and having my own worldly possessions. With a wallet, you can carry around not too much stuff, but at least have something to swing around and seem to have stuff, even if it’s just a small item that isn’t very useful.

Purse

He’s quirky, straightforward, and definitely reliable. He has an earnest approach and doesn’t take up much space but he is relevant. Most people use a wallet when they don’t have a day of shopping or handling certain tasks. Maybe happy times with the girls or something to toss in the handbag for a quick run to the grocery store. Basically, wallets don’t have a lot of extra space to put in water bottles or pile up receipts.
